The Montserrat Bar Association held its first Law Week during the week of the 17th January 2014, as part of its objectives, in line with its motto, “Serving Community and Law”.
The Law Week commenced with a church service at the St. James Anglican Church in Salem at 7am on Sunday the 26th January 2014, with the majority of the members of the legal fraternity, including the Honourable Justice Albert Redhead, in attendance. A Continuing Legal Education seminar for attorneys, presented by the Honourable Justice Albert Redhead was held on Thursday 30th January 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the High Court situate in Brades. The seminar covered a variety of prevalent legal issues.
Members of the Association collectively donated monetary contributions towards the purchase of two well-needed bath chairs for the Golden Age Home, situate in Brades. The funds were presented to the manager of the Home, by the Executive Members of the Association.
On Saturday the 1st February, at 8am to 9am there was a radio panel discussion on ZJB, on Rose’s show to discuss the prevalent topic of Legal Aid. The panel speakers were made up of Members of the Association; namely Oris Sullivan representative of the public bar and Mr. Jean Kelsick and Ms. Chivone Gerald as representatives of the private bar.
The mission of the Montserrat Bar Association is to be a transformative force in the delivery of legal services to all applicable stakeholders – local and otherwise. Proactive measures will be taken to increase the visibility, value, and accessibility of legal services to the general public. Through continued interaction with individuals in the varied categories and levels of the legal profession, the Association will seek to bring to the fore as well as address any longstanding or emergent issues related to law and its practice on Montserrat.
The Association aims to hold annual Law Weeks.
