The Montserrat Bar Association celebrated its second Law Week of activities the week commencing Sunday the 28th February 2016 through to Saturday March 6th 2016 under its theme “Serving Community and the Law”.
Law Week is a week of Activities that the Association will have geared towards public education of how the law and the legal system works, in addition to providing community service and outreach activities teaching those who have failed to file a W2 form.
The Montserrat Bar Association’s Law Week started with attorneys attending a church service this year at the Church of God of Prophecy in St. John’s.
The week’s activities were:
- Radio Quizzes throughout the week on ZJB Radio from 8:00am on Basil’s show where monetary prizes were awarded. The quiz questions were based on various members of the Montserrat Bar Association.
- On Wednesday 2nd March, there was a Free Legal Advice Fair between 10:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the top floor of the St. Patrick’s Co-operative Credit Union Building in Brades. The Fair was a walk-in-session open to all members of the community. The legal advice was provided by attorneys of the Private Bar, and the Montserrat Bar Association is pleased to report that the session was a success, and that there may be another Free Legal Advice Fair later in the year.
- On Thursday 3rd March, the winners of the Primary School Essay Competition were announced, where students prepared essays on the topic “ What does the Law Mean to Me”. This was aimed at raising public awareness of the law by children and gathering their views about the law, whilst educating them. Monetary prizes are to be awarded and presented by His Lordship Justice Albert Redhead. The Winning School, Lighthouse Community Academy will also receive an award. The students who will receive prizes are as follows:
- Ages 4 to 6: First place – Kheron Weekes of St. Augustine Roman Catholic School, and Second place – Jessica Pyke of Lookout Primary School;
- Ages 7 to 9: First place – Tene’ Fergus of Lighthouse Community Academy, and Second place – Juanique Roache of St. Augustine Roman Catholic School; and
- Ages 10 and over: First place – D’Vaughny Browne of Lookout Primary School, and Second place – Diesha Greenaway of Lighthouse Community Academy.
- On Friday 4th March, the Montserrat Bar Association held a welcome reception for the OECS Bar Association’s visiting delegates at the Tropical Mansion Suites, with the Genisys Steel Orchestra providing entertainment.
- The Continuing Legal Education Seminar was held on Saturday 5th March at the Montserrat Cultural Centre with presenters Mr. Jean Kelsick and Guest Speaker Mr. Emile Ferdinand Q.C. of St. Kitts. Mrs. Sheree Jemmotte-Rodney chaired the seminar.
- The OECS Bar Association’s quarterly meeting, which was hosted by the Montserrat Bar Association, was also held on Saturday 5th March at the Montserrat Cultural Centre, with representatives from the Bar Associations of the Member States in attendance. The President of the OECS Bar Association, Mr. Ruggles Ferguson presided over the meeting.
